| Reefs and Wrecks Pennekamp Underwater State Park offers tours to some of the most diverse and exciting ecosystems in the world! These are some of our favorites: Molasses Reef Winding sand channels twist and turn through living walls that are home to a wide variety of organisms. Flowing sea fans, massive brain corals and multitudes of sea life in this impressive tongue and spur reef system. French Reef A patch reef that will take your breath away lies just below the surface at this pristine location. Southern rays, Moray eels and silvery permit dart and dive through the numerous caves and caverns that makes this reef so memorable. Wreck of the Benwood Sunk in 1942 after a collision with the Robert C. Tuttle, the Benwood lies between French Reef and Dixie Shoals on a bottom of low profile reef covered with pockets of debris that the corals have taken over as well. The waters on and around the wreck are teeming with fish life of all shapes, sizes and colors. Key Largo Dry Rocks This serene and peaceful setting is the home to the infamous "Christ of the Deep" statue, placed in these clear waters in the summer of 1965. The reef surrounding the site is very shallow with depths ranging from 2 to 20 feet and shelters one of our beautiful pillar coral colonies and a collection of ancient brain corals. The Horseshoe Vibrant purple sea fans, sea whips and staghorn corals of various shapes and sizes dominate this alluring seascape. Juveniles of all species peer out from small hidden tunnels and narrow crevices at their underwater visitors. Caves filled with copper sweepers and other life pocket this well preserved location. The Elbow A fairly shallow tongue and spur reef system surrounds and enrobes the wreck of the Tonawanda. The steel hull is highly visible along with lengths of chain and pieces of the vessel scattered throughout the area. Yellowtail, bermuda chubs, wrasse and sergeant majors swim up to divers and snorkelers alike with playful curiosity.
