| John Pennekamp Underwater State Park As the first and only underwater state park in the United States, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park has the distinct opportunity to bring the underwater world to you, your family and friends. The 70 nautical miles that the park encompasses combines an extremely diverse world both above water and below. The mangrove ecosystems and tropical hammocks give it’s visitors an overview of how the Florida Keys started out and how they are still flourishing today. The coral reefs and all of it’s marine life show it’s visitor the complexity and beauty of this fragile ecosystem, and why it has been now protected here for decades. John Pennekamp offers kayaks and canoes for rental to explore the mangrove trails on your own. There are two short trails that will lead you through the dense and beautiful hardwood, tropical hammocks (with lookout points that are unbelievable!). There are picnic and beach areas, for just enjoying the weather of Key Largo and a visitor center with an amazing 30,000 gallon saltwater aquarium.
